Art of Smart Travel Bookclub

Travel provides a matchless education…but reading is good, too! To that end, here’s my travel reading list for 2017. It’s clearly not your typical type of travel literature, but that’s what makes it so fun!

I’ll be posting my book reviews every few months over on the blog.

Book 1

The Gift of Fear and Other Survival Signals that Protect Us from Violence by Gavin de Becker

Oprah Winfrey calls de Becker the US’s leading expert on violent behavior. True fear is a gift. Unwarranted fear is a curse. This book will help you learn how to tell the difference. Read my review HERE.

Book 2

Travel Health Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Leave, While You’re Away, and After You’re Back by Mark Wise, M.D.

Currently only available on Kindle (but you can find used paperbacks online), this book was written by a travel medicine specialist for the non-medical community. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler looking to brush up on destination-specific safety concerns or a roadtripping neophyte who needs to start with the basics, this book is invaluable for pre-trip prep, during-trip concerns, and post-trip “what-the-hell-is-this-rash??” issues. Read my review HERE.

Book 3

Left of Bang: How the Marine Corps’ Combat Hunter Program Can Save Your Life by Patrick Van Horne and Jason A. Riley

Have you ever gotten an inexplicable feeling that something is just…not right? We’ve all felt it–whether it’s happened when walking into a new restaurant, passing a stranger on the sidewalk, or even returning to our hotel room late at night. This is a book that teaches you how to pay attention to that quiet little voice inside…and how to increase its perceptivity to danger. Review is coming soon!
